CrossRoads Community Church responded an urgent need from one of its own church family member, raising $11,000 in 48 hours.

On Saturday, October 28, 2021, Reynaldo De Los Santos Ruiz, 21 was a passenger in a car that was in a head on crash on highway 67. Ruiz was killed on impact.

Ruiz attended Crossroads with Martin Sanchez and Guillermina Garcia his uncle and aunt. Ruiz had been living in Statesboro for two years, working in his uncle's construction company.

CrossRoads has a large number of international members at the church, including latinos and hispanics.

Ruiz's parents wanted their only son's body shipped back to Mexico so he could be back with his family.

His sister, who lives in Mississippi traveled by uber to identify the body. She was only in Statesboro for a few hours before ubering back to Mississippi.

Community responds

On Tuesday, CrossRoad's pastors Cary and Janet Swanson made an appeal on the church's Facebook page for help in raising the funds to send his body back home.

In less than 48 hours members of the church and community stepped up in extraordinary ways to help this family in their darkest hour.

"The outpouring of love, compassion and prayers for this beautiful family has been wonderful to see," said Pastor Cary Swanson. "The family is so touched by this. As you can imagine they are completely devastated."

Joiner Anderson Funeral Home is handling the preparing and shipping the body back to Mexico. They hope to ship early next week. It will take two to three weeks to get the body to the family. It is a long and complicated process.
