Celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with Georgia Southern University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. This year’s month-long celebration, which highlights the history, culture and many contributions of the Latino and Hispanic communities in the U.S., will feature a series of brown bag lectures and lunches, movies, discussion panels, study abroad information sessions, soccer, fiestas, food and more. 

“It is our privilege and responsibility to recognize the contributions made by and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans, and celebrate their heritage and culture not just this month, but always,” said TaJuan R. Wilson, Ed.D., associate vice president of Inclusive Excellence and chief diversity officer. “Even after the national recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month ends on Oct. 15, Georgia Southern will continue hosting cultural events to celebrate Hispanic heritage throughout the academic year. Additionally, we have joined the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in order to further our commitment and ensure we stay on top of emerging trends in higher education and beyond to support our students.” 

Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month events will take place on the Statesboro, Armstrong and Liberty campuses and are free and open to the public. Highlighted events include:

Tormenta FC Soccer Game (Statesboro Campus)
Saturday, Sept. 11, 8 p.m.
Statesboro Campus: Eagle Field at Erk Russell Park 

South Georgia Tormenta FC soccer club will host Hispanic Heritage Night as they take on the North Texas Soccer Club. Sponsored by Viamedia, the club will offer a buy one, get one free ticket deal for the match. Fans can expect food and music bringing awareness to Hispanic heritage, as well as a special prize for winning the in-match Hispanic Heritage Trivia.

Brown Bag Presentation: “What has been learned about successful Latinas in STEM in the U.S. and México” (Armstrong campus)

Alejandro J. Gallard Martínez, Ph.D., professor and Georgia Southern’s Goizueta Distinguished Chair of Education, will discuss the role of successful Latinas in STEM in the U.S. and México. Brown bag lunches will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

Follow a group of residents in Upper Manhattan’s Washington Heights as they chase their sueñitos in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s screen interpretation of his Broadway hit musical, “In the Heights.” The events are presented by Georgia Southern’s Office of Student Activities.

Join the Office of Multicultural Affairs and guests for a discussion panel on the current immigration climate and practices.

Latin American Fiesta (Armstrong Campus)

The Latin American Fiesta brings the Georgia Southern community together for food from various Latin American countries, game stations and dancing. Remember to bring your Eagle ID to enjoy the fun.

Flag Parade
Russell Union Rotunda In partnership with the Association of Latin American Students, the parade of flags from Hispanic and Latin countries will be carried by participants beginning at Lakeside Dining Commons through the Pedestrium to the Russell Union Rotunda. A mini festival including presentations, music, dancing and food will take place at the Rotunda following the parade.
