A 45 year old Macon man, Michael Powell, Jr. was killed around 8:50 pm Wednesday, March 17 according to Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch.

Bulloch County 911 received a call at approximately 8:50 PM, Wednesday, of a pedestrian walking down the middle of eastbound lanes of I-16 in dark clothing at mile marker 134. Moments later, they received a call that the pedestrian had been struck by a car.

According to GSP Trooper Jamey Holloway they located Powell's Nissan Xterra on the shoulder of the west bound lane of I-16. Trooper Holloway said the car was out of gas and they assume he was trying to flag down a motorist for help.

For some unexplained reason, he crossed the westbound lane, the median and was in the center lane of the eastbound lane of I-16 when he was struck. The Bryan County female driver of the Ford Edge struck and killed Powell on impact. She attempted to swerve to miss Powell but was unsuccessful.

The driver of the vehicle received no physical injuries in the accident. Her car received significant damage in the accident.

Trooper Holloway said there was no reason to believe drugs or alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Bulloch County Sheriff's Department, Bulloch County EMS, Bulloch Fire and DOT responded to assist with the accident.

Grice Connect sends our thoughts and prayers to the Powell family and to the driver of the car that struck Mr. Powell.
