The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued warnings about hazardous travel conditions and dangerously low wind chills persisting across the Statesboro and Bulloch County area Thursday morning, January 23, 2025. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling, both on foot and by vehicle.
Freezing temperatures overnight have created widespread black ice, a nearly invisible layer of ice that is extremely difficult to spot. This poses a significant danger to drivers, as it can cause vehicles to lose traction and skid unexpectedly.
Pedestrians are also at risk of slips and falls on sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots.
“Black ice is particularly dangerous because it blends in with the road surface, making it nearly impossible to see,” warns a statement from the National Weather Service Charleston. “This deceptive nature can catch drivers and pedestrians off guard, leading to accidents and injuries.”
The NWS advises drivers to significantly reduce their speed and to be extra cautious on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads, where black ice is more likely to form. Pedestrians should also take small, careful steps and avoid walking on potentially icy surfaces.
In addition to the black ice, the region is experiencing extremely cold wind chills, ranging from 13 to 20 degrees above zero. These temperatures pose a risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for those who spend extended periods outdoors.
The Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning. The NWS strongly advises residents to:
- Limit time spent outdoors: If you must go outside, dress in multiple layers of warm clothing, including a hat and gloves.
- Check on vulnerable individuals: Make frequent checks on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors who may be more susceptible to the cold.
- Use heating devices safely: Ensure portable heaters are used according to manufacturer instructions. Never use generators or grills indoors, as they can produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.
The prolonged period of bitter cold has prompted local officials to urge residents to take precautions to protect their homes and businesses as well. This includes insulating pipes to prevent freezing and ensuring adequate heating.
“This continues to be an unusually long period of bitterly cold weather,” the NWS statement emphasized. “Be sure to take protective actions to prepare both your home and business as well as yourself for this period of very cold weather.”
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service, Grioce Connect or wherever they get local news.
