In a gathering that highlighted both the excitement and anticipation surrounding Augusta University's new leadership, the university community warmly welcomed Dr. Russell Keen as its new president and his wife, Karen Keen, as the First Lady. The event, held at the Augusta Country Club, was a momentous occasion for celebrating the Keens' selection and outlining Dr. Keen's bold vision for the future of Augusta University.
President Keen invited friends from throughout his life including his first grade teacher, friends he made during his time as a student and staff member at Georgia Southern University, and friends from across Georgia that have impacted him throughout his career.
The evening kicked off with remarks from a representative of the Augusta University Foundation and the Medical College of Georgia Foundation, who expressed deep gratitude for the support that has propelled the university's growth.
Over the past nine years, Dr. Keen, who previously served as Executive Vice President for Administration and Chief of Staff, has been instrumental in boosting AU's enrollment by over 25%, research funding by more than 35%, and the university’s economic impact by upwards of 45%.
Georgia's Speaker of the House, Jon Burns, took the stage to offer his warm congratulations and share his confidence in Dr. Keen’s abilities.
“Russell’s work ethic, his commitment to this state, and his deep-rooted relationships across Georgia are what make him an exceptional choice for this role,” said Burns. He also praised Karen Keen for her unwavering support and anticipated contribution to the university’s community.
Dr. Keen delivered a heartfelt address, reflecting on his journey and expressing deep appreciation for the support from his family, including his wife Karen, who has been his partner for 22 years.
“Karen has been beside me every step of the way, and I am grateful for her support and dedication,” Keen remarked.
He also acknowledged the collective efforts of educators and leaders who have shaped his career, highlighting their impact on his approach to leadership and commitment to excellence.
Keen’s address underscored his vision for Augusta University’s future, emphasizing the importance of enhancing research, innovation, and student success.
“Now is the time to rise up and become the best university in America,” Keen said. He continued, “Whether you are a freshman or a post-doc, whether you're a long-time faculty member or a volunteer faculty member, whether you're a first-time visitor, a job candidate, a foundation trustee, or anything and everything in between, we are going to commit to setting ourselves on an elevated path to respecting every person and finding ways to demonstrate our focused value while making sure that every interaction -- every interaction -- is one that we strive for excellence. That is the Augusta way.”
Dr. Keen articulated a vision for an inclusive and respected campus culture, saying, “When people interact with us, when they arrive on our campus for the first time, they'll leave knowing in their hearts that they have been somewhere truly special. They will feel respected, they will feel valued, and they will feel a part of what's going on.” He emphasized that the culture would be “contagious,” inspiring others to get involved and invest in Augusta University’s future.
In his address, Keen spoke passionately about the university’s role in transformative research and education, asserting, “We will be the most externally engaged student center, faculty-valued, staff-appreciated university in this country.” He also highlighted Augusta University’s location, noting, “We are located in the best city to live, to work, to play, to innovate, and to invest, and that is Augusta University, the city.”
As the event drew to a close, the enthusiasm among attendees was palpable. Keen’s arrival marks a new chapter for Augusta University, filled with optimism and potential. With Dr. Keen leading, the university is poised for continued success and advancement, driven by a clear vision and a dedicated leadership team.
Keen’s commitment to the future was clear as he rallied the community with a call to action: “Will you rise up and help us? Let us rise up and take this university and our community and our state to greater heights, hand-in-hand, side-by-side, with resolve, determination, and grit. I know we can do great things for Augusta and for Augusta University and the state of Georgia.”
