Bulloch Family Practice provides old-fashioned care with modern flare

Dr. Loy Cowart, affectionately known as Chip, along with co-owner Mark Anderson, NP-C, provide contemporary medical care with a commitment to the individualized focus of the country doctor of yesteryear. To Dr. Cowart, Mr. Anderson, and their staff, the patient is the most important asset.

Nestled in a picturesque building in the Statesboro Market District, is Bulloch Family Practice. Open since December of 2023, Dr. Loy Cowart and Mark Anderson, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, ENP-C have been providing quality service with one priority on their minds: their patients.

Cowart grew up in Emanuel County. A Magna Cum Laude University of Georgia graduate, he attended the Medical College of Georgia medical school, and completed his residency at Anderson Area Medical Center in South Carolina. He returned home to practice in Claxton more than 29 years ago.

He opened a solo family practice at that time that included OB, nursing home, and hospital services. Over the years, he won several awards in relation to the field of medicine. During the pandemic, Cowart decided to return to the way he started in an independently owned family practice.

The groundwork for what is now Bulloch Family Practice was set in motion in July of 2023, and the next six months were spent planning for the current practice. Cowart, along with fellow owner and nurse practitioner Mark Anderson and a small staff including Cowart's wife, Elizabeth, who is a registered nurse, provide the kind of quality care that patients seek when looking for a new general practitioner.

"We own it. It's locally owned; it's not owned by a hospital system. We're going to keep it that way," Cowart posits. "It's a smaller practice so that we can give the patients more individual attention with the older way of doing it."

Mark Anderson grew up in Screven County and currently lives in Pembroke with his wife and dogs. He has earned two Bachelor of Science degrees from Georgia Southern University in chemistry and nursing. He practiced for nearly a decade in home health, critical care, and community nursing before earning a Master of Science in Nursing from South University.

Mark Anderson, NP-C, has a special interest in helping patients improve their quality of life through positive lifestyle changes.

He is board certified as a nurse practitioner in both family and emergency specialties. As a bariatric patient, he focuses on lifestyle medicine and holistic life improvement. His own weight loss has opened the door for him to participate in local events like the HOSA 5k and Statesboro Family YMCA's Heart Run this year, as well as fulfill a lifelong dream of skydiving.

He is excited about the joint venture with Dr. Cowart, and believes the partnership is another bonus they can offer their patients.

"When [patients] see either of us, they are getting the benefits of the two of us as a team," Anderson says.

Bulloch County Practice falls under Privia Healthcare, which assists with the paperwork and other insurance aspects, but the quality care is provided by the faces one would see when they come to the quaint office. Being a part of the Privia Group allows Bulloch Family Practice to offer patients perks such as a patient portal and a mobile app without having to sacrifice time spent with their doctor.

Cowart's and Anderson's combined experience allows them to provide superior care with a individualized focus. Both are happy to run a private practice to do what they love: helping patients.

They are able to expertly dovetail personalized care with modern advancements. Bulloch Family Practice offers virtual visits through their website. This service is offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The office has an onsite phlebotomist and is equipped for rapid testing that includes flu and Covid.

Both medical professionals are committed to providing quality medical care by keeping their patients at the forefront of their minds. The office tries to be respectful of wait times and devising plans of care that work best for each person.

"We try to be respectful of the patient's time because their time is just as valuable as our time," Cowart muses. "Our goal is that the visits are not under a certain time frame for each visit. It's individualized so each patient gets the time that they need. Also, the care we give is individualized with what that patient needs."

Cowart and Anderson are already looking to expand the services that they and their staff provide to include skin biopsies and routine diabetic eye screenings. They treat complex, chronic conditions, provide patient education for overall wellness improvement through lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, and develop an individualized plan of care for each patient through a collaborative approach.
