Abby Newton won medalist honors at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.

Abby Newton shot 73-71-72 to earn medalist honors and lead Georgia Southern women's golf to a second-place finish in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on April 4 at Mimosa Hills Golf Club.

Newton finished with an even-par 216 for her first collegiate victory, and the Eagles finished five strokes behind Western Carolina on the team leaderboard. Karlee Vardas tied for 13th, while Regina Plascencia and Taylor Oberparleiter tied for 22nd.

Newton followed her first-round 73 by shooting a 2-under 34 on the back nine to post a 71 in the second round. The junior carded a 72 today, matching the lowest third-round score.

Vardas eagled the 365-yard, par-4 10th hole and followed it with a pair of birdies on her way to a 73 in the first round. Plascencia birdied her first three holes and finished the round with six on her way to a 72 in the second round.

"This was not the finish we had in mind after starting strong at Mimosa Hills. Although we are very proud of Abby for bringing home her first collegiate win, a lot of lessons were learned and we definitely exposed a few areas in which we need to improve on leading up to the Sun Belt Championship. Time to get back to work. #GATA,” said head coach Mimi Burke.
