Eagles sweep second-straight conference foe, down ULM in doubleheader

The Eagles record improved to 26-21. They will wrap up a four-game road trip with a Wednesday night game at Jacksonville.

The Georgia Southern baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader against the ULM Warhawks, taking game one with a final score of 9-4 and securing the sweep with a game two final of 6-3.

GAME ONE - GEORGIA SOUTHERN 9-4

Georgia Southern (25-21, 14-9 SBC) took to the board in the top of the second inning when Cade Parker's bases-clearing double scored Sam BlancatoSean White, and T.J. McKenzie. White added a fourth run to the total with a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning, and Kent Schmidt followed suit with the second homer of his career to take a 5-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Josh Tate's RBI-single scored McKenzie and put the Eagles up 6-0 before ULM (20-27, 7-16 SBC) responded.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, ULM scored four runs to cut the Eagles lead to 6-4. Southern fought back in the top of the eighth with a Sean Smith RBI-single to score pinch runner Rhett Hammontree, then a bases-loaded walk in the ninth by Jarrett Brown plated Parker and a Blancato sac fly scored Tate to cement the Eagles win at 9-4.

Jacob Phillips earned his third victory of the season with 6.2 innings of one-run ball, sitting down four. Mitchell Gross earned the second save of his season with two innings of scoreless ball.

GAME TWO - GEORGIA SOUTHERN 6-3

A pitcher's duel took place in Monroe for most of the game, as a combined one run was scored in the first six innings. Georgia Southern's (26-21, 15-9 SBC) JD Kaiser homered to right field to take the 1-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Cade Parker's three-run bomb broke the game open, bringing Sean Smith and T.J. McKenzie home with him. Southern then took a 6-0 lead in the top of the eighth when McKenzie fired a line drive down the left field line to score Sean White and Smith.

The Warhawks (20-28, 7-17 SBC) fought back in the bottom of the ninth inning, starting with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, then two RBI-groundouts to cut the lead in half at 6-3. Jake Martin struck out the final batter to prevent further damage and secure the sweep for the Eagles.

Ty Fisher took his sixth victory of the year after eight innings of strong baseball, only allowing two runs and sitting down four.
