Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) at Georgia Southern is raising money in their 23rd annual Strawberry Sale for their philanthropy Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

Last year, the Strawberry Sale raised over $50,000. Since 2002 when the sale first started, $400,000 has been raised.

From January 23rd through February 23rd, members of the Statesboro community, families, and friends can order flats of strawberries through a Crowd Change link. On the link, people have the option to buy a flat or donate one. Each flat contains eight cartons and is $30.

A strawberry is one of Zeta Tau Alpha's national symbols. It became the symbol when one of the founders was gifted a basket of strawberries and inspired the group of founders to host their first social event.

In the early years of the strawberry sale, ZTA members recorded people's orders on a piece of paper.

Becca Morrow is a Georgia Southern Zeta Tau Alpha alumna. "I remember having a paper and taking a picture and sending it to my mom to tell her friends about," Morrow said.

"Over the past few years, we have really focused on the community aspect," said ZTA Public Relations chair Summer Hayes.

Beth McAvoy is an alumna of the ZTA chapter at Georgia Southern and is the housing director for ZTA at Georgia Southern.

"One of the things that we do is make donations during the day to different groups in the area, the police department, the fire department, and social services folks," said McAvoy. "We donate to a lot of different groups in the community that we feel help us throughout the year or need help -- nursing homes, anything to make life a bit more pleasant for people who are shut in and may not be able to enjoy what they use to get out and do."

The Strawberry sale is their biggest philanthropy event of the Spring semester and encourages the girls to connect with their community. The event involves the collegiate members of ZTA as well as alumnae members.

"We always say Zeta isn't for four years; it's for forever," said Hayes.

The day the strawberries are delivered, a truck brings the strawberries from Plant City, Florida at 6:30 a.m. Alumnae and active members will get to the lower parking lot of Hanner Field House and unload the truck of strawberries.
