Sarah Carolyn Norman von Waldner, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Southern Manor Senior Living in Statesboro, Georgia surrounded by her sons and daughters-in-law.

Carolyn was born on December 19, 1932 in Savannah, Georgia to Harden Clifton Norman, Sr. and Sarah Sue Thrasher Norman. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1950. After marrying Benjamin L. “Bennie” von Waldner on May 21, 1951, she maintained their home in Savannah while he served overseas in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Upon Bennie’s return from Japan, they worked together in his service station in Savannah.

Carolyn and Bennie moved to Statesboro in 1971. She worked in the Registrar’s office at then-Georgia Southern College. After they purchased Ideal Cleaners, a dry-cleaning business, both worked tirelessly until their retirement in 2002. Carolyn was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Statesboro where she served on the Council for many years. She was an avid Georgia Southern Eagles football and basketball team fan.

Carolyn loved her family and had an infectious laugh. You always knew when she was in the room! She gave her love and her time to her family and friends all of her life.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Glynda Michelle von Waldner, and her brother, Harden Clifton “Cliff” Norman, Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Mark (Trina) von Waldner of Athens, Georgia, and Todd (Cindy) von Waldner of Statesboro; six grandchildren, Davey (April) von Waldner, Derek (Molly) von Waldner, Daniel (Kayla) von Waldner, Chris (Felicia) Crowe, Tiffany Williams, and Natalie von Waldner; ten great-grandchildren (Justin, Jaydn, Evan, Emma, Malcolm, Matilda Jane, Stacilee, Hunter, Brantley, Jason, Crystal). Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Nancy Rooks Norman of Acworth, Georgia, and Cecile von Waldner (Dick) Joiner of Columbus, Georgia, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and special friend, Freddie Schafer.
