Sadly, our dearly loved, Barbara Lewis, 76, of Statesboro, GA, passed away on February 2, 2025 after a brief illness.
Barbara was born in Greensboro, KY (Go Wildcats!) on March 7, 1948 to L.E. Thompson and Mary Tommie Shreve Thompson. Barbara graduated from Grady Hospital School of Nursing in 1969 and spent several years working as a RN. In 1985, Barbara became one of the first graduates from Georgia Southern University's Nurse Practitioner program. From 1986 to 1996 Barbara worked at and was, largely, the sole provider of Pembroke Professional Center (St. Joseph’s Health Center); helping establish one of the first rural health clinics in Georgia. From 1996 to 2018, Barbara, did what she did best, helping alcoholics and addicts, working at Willingway Hospital.
Above all Barbara was lover of her family and friends. Barbara met her husband Thomas M. "Reese” Lewis in Atlanta and they were married 12/31/1970. For 54 years they loved (and occasionally annoyed) each other. Together, they raised and spoiled two children, Ann Lewis Glasheen and Chris Lewis. Barbara was preceded in death by her father, L.E. and mother, Tommie and her brother, Les.
She is survived by her husband, Reese (Tom), daughter, Ann, son, Chris, sister, Melanie “Mellie” Thompson. And the grandkids - we all know who she lived for:(in order of age) Rosalie, Josh, Aliza, Wayne and Astrid. There are a host of other family children who she loved: Meagan, Maya, India, Alex, Zach, Charlie and Cali. There is a much longer list of family and friends whose lives she has touched that she leaves behind- she will be greatly missed.
Barbara loved deeply- she loved music, animals, the mountains, laughter (this lady was not a bore) and Kentucky basketball, but above all, she loved others-no conditions, no strings. You will always have a place at Barbara's table. God IS love.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Barbara's name to Georgia Southern Center for Addiction Recovery https://ww2.georgiasouthern.edu/jphcoph/addiction/ or St Jude's https://www.stjude.org/.
