When the editorial board at Grice Connect met to discuss walking back down memory lane with a remarkable woman who made an indelible mark on our community, we unanimously agreed on Patsy Bobo. Patsy set a bar so high, we are not sure anyone has or could come close to replicating it.
Patsy was a dear friend and mentor to me and my wife, Lori Grice. When stepping into any community project, we always pause and think about how Patsy would lead this effort.
As we head into April, it is impossible for anyone that knew Patsy to not think of her and the impact she had on so many. April was the month that the annual Deen Day Smith Awards were held. In the three decades that the awards were held, over 800 citizens were honored. (A list of Deen Day recipients is included at the end of this story).
Patsy Rocker Bobo was born July 14, 1941 to Alvin Gordon Rocker and Anna Wolfenbarger Rocker in Knoxville, Tennessee. She moved with her family as an infant to Statesboro, where she made her lifelong home. And wow, is Statesboro better because of it!
She graduated from Statesboro High School and the University of Georgia, although she later graduated from The New York School of Interior Design. She was married to developer David Bobo for 45 years, and together, they were a force to be reckoned with. She had style and flare, ambition and vision, and was a steady supporter of those in need.
Patsy died on Sunday, November 3, 2019, after battling a long illness, surrounded by family and friends at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The news of her death shook our community because she was such a fixture in it.
At the time of her death, Statesboro Magazine described her as the "doyenne of Statesboro." For those unfamiliar with the word, it means "a woman who is the most respected or prominent person in a particular field."
"Patsy had a flare and zest for life that few could rival," her obituary said. "Whatever project she started, she committed to totally, and this was always her style. An event maker who loved challenges, she was willing to answer the call for help when asked -– and the community and her friends asked for her help often. No project was too small nor too large for Patsy."
Patsy Bobo has since been remembered as an incredibly talented business woman turned philanthropist. Her mark on our our community is difficult to explain because it is so deeply embedded into our history as a community.
She is best known for founding the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards in partnership with the Statesboro Herald.
In 1988, she called on her longtime friend, Deen Day Smith, for permission to use Deen’s name in the creation of an awards program that would honor Bulloch Countians who devote their energies to helping others. Mrs. Smith enthusiastically agreed to the concept. Smith’s first husband was Brooklet native Cecil B. Day, who founded Days Inn of America.
For more than three decades, the Deen Day Smith Awards have recognized and honored hundreds of our community's most outstanding philanthropists and humanitarians -- all because of Patsy.
“Bulloch County and Statesboro has lost a true giant and cheerleader for our community,” Gerald Edenfield said when Patsy died. “She is the epitome of a true Southern Belle and Humanitarian. There is not one part of our community that she did not love and have an impact on. She was a true friend -- one you never said no to. I will miss her dearly, as will our community.”
Patsy was also “THE” hostess in our community. She loved to entertain, and her and husband David’s Christmas parties were legendary. She made sure our community was decorated for every season and that we always put our best foot forward as a community in every way possible.
“I got to know Patsy initially when I worked as the administrative officer to Hal Averitt, the President of Sea Island Bank at the time. I remember what a powerful presence she was,” said Kathy Spivey. “She was a larger than life personality and she used her personality, charisma, and dogged determination to push the leaders of our community to be better and promote our community in unimaginable ways. She shunned the spotlight and always was focused on helping others. She had the ability to dream bigger than any person I knew and then back up those dreams in ways that were more incredible than her dreams, which often seemed impossible.”
For over five decades, she was Statesboro’s chief cheerleader and sales person. She truly believed that this was the best community in the world to live, work, and play. She worked hard to make sure everyone knew how special this community was, and we hope she would be extremely pleased with the direction we're headed in now.
Her passion for bettering our community lives on now, even after she's gone, demonstrating the long-lasting power of a woman with presence and perseverance.
