On March 27, 2025, Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro hosted a vibrant "Resident Fun Day" for its residents, celebrating the refreshing joys of spring, fresh air, and sunshine.

Westwood, a 60-bed facility, had 30 residents who wanted to participate and were provided the necessary assistance to join.

“I got to sit down and eat with my family, meaning, I consider the residents my family," shared Hanna Davis, speech therapist.

“The Westwood team did a wonderful job, and the day was filled with exciting activities like line-dancing, music, cook-out, and cornhole to entertain and show we care that they are happy,” shared Hollins Corner, Rehab Director. “We try to engage the residents daily in therapeutic activities that improve their quality of life. They need not only physical but mental, emotional and spiritual care. This kind of thoughtful and caring approach truly makes a difference in the lives of our residents."

The residents enjoyed tunes like ‘Boots on the Ground’ and ‘Come On Home’ and listened to music from legendary artists like Michael Jackson and Chris Stapleton.

Some local friends, along with a group of motorcyclists (friends of the Westwood Director Of Nursing, Barbara Roberts) joined in the fun, accompanied by a special wave from Officer Larry Futch of the Statesboro Police Department. Hope Ranch of Guyton also brought their ducklings and a baby goat, making it a heartwarming community event.

“At Westwood, we have a great team of employees who love our residents. Their safety and well-being is our priority!” shared Karen O’Neal, Administrator

The Westwood kitchen provided a wonderful spread: grilled cheeseburgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, baked beans, ambrosia, cookies, popcorn, and punch.

“Everyone jumped in to help serve the residents,” said Pearl Newkirk, Head of Housekeeping. “I loved everything. Westwood called it ‘Resident Fun Day’ and that's exactly what it was!”

Jackie Cox, Community Liaison for Bridge Hospice in Pooler, brought a delicious treat to Westwood for the event, to show appreciation to their employees. A popcorn bar, freshly-popped and seasoned with a variety of flavors like ranch and cheddar was available along with sweet and savory options like chocolate, marshmallows, pretzels, cereal, and malted milk bars to top off the popcorn creations.

"We love to be unique," smiled Cox.

‘Resident Fun Day’ at Westwood truly captured the spirit of community, reminding us all of the power of kindness and connection, no matter our age!.
