Make plans for this weekend for Super Museum Sunday! Museums and historic sites throughout Georgia will participate in “Super Museum Sunday” as part of the Georgia History Festival’s statewide celebration. Over 100 museums and historic sites across the state will be open to the public for free on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Museums across our state, rich in history and beauty, offer a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our land, people, and culture.

Here in Statesboro, explore the Georgia Southern Museum located on the Georgia Southern campus. The Museum contains permanent and changing exhibits curated by faculty and students. The permanent exhibit, Uncharted Worlds: The Natural History of Georgia’s Coastal Plain, transports you through millions of years of changes to Georgia’s landscape from the arrival of the first humans to the current coastal plain.

“Come face-to-face with a mosasaur, Tylosaurus proriger, a 78 million-year-old, 26 foot-long marine reptile, and Georgiacetus vogtlensis, a 41 million-year-old whale, the most primitive whale fossil discovered in North America.” The “Vogtle Whale” was unearthed during construction of Plant Vogtle in 1983.

Other exhibits include, Charted Worlds: The Cultural History of Georgia’s Coastal Plain. This exhibit highlights important stories of the interactions between cultures and environment that created the distinct traditions and heritage of Georgia’s Coastal Plain.

The current changing exhibit is "Crack, Boom, Bam: The History of the American Drum Set." Curated by Dr. Matthew W. Hill, head of the Fred and Dinah Gretsch Collection of Musical Instruments at Georgia Southern University, Crack Boom Bam! Takes visitors on a surprising journey that begins with marching and culminates in rock ‘n’ roll.
