On Monday March 27, two patients of The Therapy SPOT received free Amtryke adaptive bikes from the AMBUCS Organization. The event took place at 12:15pm at the Morris Bank branch on North Main Street in Statesboro, GA. The Amtyrke bike recipients were James Welton and Kash, who are both patients of the Therapy SPOT. Both specialized bikes were assembled by the Statesboro Fire Department team members Nick Hunt and Cody Hanna.
The Statesboro Morris Bank branch donated $2,000 to The Therapy SPOT, as a part of their 12 Days of Christmas giveaway back in December 2022. The heartwarming exchange on a cloudy Monday afternoon was quickly brightened by the radiating smiles of both children as they received their adaptive bike treasures.
Truly, there are no words to describe the special moments shared at Morris Bank on North Main Street during the Monday bike giveaway.
Perhaps it was James Welton gently napping during the moment while his family surrounded him in love or support. Or maybe it was Kash’s dad taking him on his first bike ride around the Morris Bank circle—just the two of them.
Either way you take it: both moments became memories both families will cherish for life.
And it is precisely the moments like these that the Therapy SPOT team seeks to foster through their organization's efforts. The Therapy SPOT team works tirelessly to give mobility-challenged children the chance to experience a normal childhood. Through their Amtryke bike giveaways, many of the young patients have their dreams fulfilled in receiving these special gifts which they never thought they would.
The Amtryke bikes are purchased through the AMBUCS organization (American Business Clubs), and attending Therapy SPOT physical therapist, Dr. Kailee Sylvester, known affectionately as Dr. Kai, does much of the work for designing these bikes.
Dr. Kai’s passion towards having these bikes available to her patients is palpable.
"It is the patients who keep our team motivated to achieve this work, she said. "For most of our patients, it is a dream come true to have their own bike to ride at their leisure. We here at the Therapy SPOT are inspired to continue our collective work to help our patients see their dreams come true!”
The Therapy SPOT co-owner, Caroline Bowman (M.Ed.), has also pioneered much of the progress and advancement of the Amtryke bike donation gifts.
Here's a little more about the young recipients of the most recent Amtryke bikes. These lucky fellows are named James Welton and Kash.
James Welton is 3 years old, and Kash is 10 years old.
James Welton’s mom describes him as loving to “spend time with family, especially his big brother.” She is elated for James to be receiving this bike, as she has “always been trying to find activities that he can be included in. So, this bike would allow that, while simultaneously improving his physical abilities.”
Kash’s mom states that he is “nonverbal and currently functions on a 3-year-old level. However, he meets no strangers and has the most infectious smile. When he first met Dr. Kai, he struggled with walking. But once Dr. Kai introduced him to the bike, he immediately took to it. Now, he truly has the chance to experience what being a typical child feels like.”
The Therapy SPOT team would like to thank Morris Bank for being the sponsor to their two newest Amtryke bikes. They would also like to thank the Statesboro Fire Department for their continued efforts in assembling the Amtryke adaptive bikes.
