Two dead in fatal crash on Hwy. 46 in Candler County

Two people were killed in a tragic two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 46 in Candler County Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred around 4:20 p.m. near St. Matthews Church Road, when a pickup truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with a sedan.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 46 claimed the lives of two people just west of Bulloch County in Candler County. The accident occurred around 4:20 p.m. near St. Matthews Church Road, west of Pulaski.

Bulloch County 911 dispatchers quickly mobilized first responders, including Candler County EMS, Metter Fire and Rescue, Candler Sheriff’s deputies, and Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Troopers, to the scene. Preliminary reports from authorities indicate that a white Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling west on Hwy. 46 when it crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a sedan traveling east.

Tragically, both occupants of the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was transported to Candler County Hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released at this time.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GA DOT) closed Hwy. 46 between Tomahawk Road and St. Matthews Church Road while the GSP’s Specialized Collision and Reconstruction Team (SCRT) investigated the accident.  They reopened the road at 7:35 p.m.

The investigation is being led by GSP Post 45 Trooper First Class Matt Davis. No further details have been released about the cause of the accident or the identities of those involved.
