Tragic two-car crash claims multiple lives in Evans County

A tragic two-car crash in Evans County on Saturday afternoon has left three people dead and three others hospitalized. The collision, which occurred near the intersection of Hwy. 301 and Hwy. 169 around 1:30 PM, prompted a swift response from emergency services, including the deployment of medical helicopters.

Evans County, GA – August 31, 2024 – A devastating two-car accident on Saturday afternoon has resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left three others hospitalized according to GSP. The crash occurred around 1:30 PM near the intersection of Hwy. 301 and Hwy. 169, prompting an urgent response from local emergency services.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a blue Nissan SUV was traveling south on 301, in the northbound lane, when it collided with a white Ford E 350 van, head-on, that was traveling in the opposite direction.

Evans County EMS quickly requested mutual aid for the serious collision involving six people. In a bid to expedite medical assistance, two medical helicopters were called to the scene to transport critically injured victims to trauma centers.

Emergency responders from Evans County EMS and Evans County Fire and Rescue worked tirelessly to extricate multiple victims trapped in the wreckage. Two of these individuals were airlifted to nearby trauma centers, both reported to be in critical condition. A third victim was transported by Bulloch County EMS to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, GA, suffering from serious injuries.

Mellie Nesmith, the Evans County Coroner, was also dispatched to the scene to assist with the fatalities. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released as authorities work to notify next of kin.

As the investigation unfolds, the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) has closed Hwy. 301 south of Interstate 16 at the Hwy. 169 intersection. Officials have indicated that the road will remain closed for the duration of the investigation.  Evans County Sheriff Mac Edwards is asking motorist to avoid the area for the next several hours.
