The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority has created a unique way to support downtown businesses while also enjoying Statesboro’s downtown charm.
Downtown Bingo challenges participants to get out and explore their community by dining in restaurants and shopping in their stores. With this round of the game near its close, it's not too late!
Bingo cards for the current round need to be completed and returned by December 23, with great prizes, such as local gifts and gift cards, for winners.
"The goal of Downtown Bingo was just to bring awareness to places they may not normally eat and shop," said Elena McLendon of the DSDA. "The best thing that can happen is someone plays and they discover a new local favorite that they never even had been into before."
For Felicia Dunn, a familiar face at Hobby Lobby, known for her warm smile and kind greetings, that’s exactly what happened. While playing Bingo, Dunn discovered Aunt Kaycee’s TransFURmation Pet Spaw.
“I had never been there before, but I absolutely plan to return. They have great service and a kind atmosphere,” she shared. Dunn also reflected on how the game rekindled her love for downtown. “It’s a great way to revisit places we know and love while seeing them in a refreshed light.”
How to Play Downtown Bingo
Getting involved in Downtown Bingo is not difficult. Players start by printing out a bingo card. To complete a row, visit and patronize the businesses on the card; keep receipts for verification. Once a row is complete, participants turn in their card to claim a prize.
The first round of Downtown Bingo launched this fall, running from October 24 to November 10. Initially pitched via the DSDA's intern program, the initiative quickly proved to be a success. Its popularity spawned an extended round and plans to continue the program into the new year.
Future bingo cards will highlight different downtown businesses, offering new opportunities to explore and engage.
Supporting Local, Building Community
Downtown Bingo is a chance to reconnect with Statesboro’s downtown, rediscover old favorites, and uncover new gems. Whether it’s finding a new spot for lunch or revisiting a boutique you haven’t been to in years, this initiative makes exploring downtown rewarding in more ways than one.
By supporting local businesses, participants are helping to strengthen the community and ensure its continued growth and vibrancy.
When you shop local, everyone wins!
