Happy 100th Birthday to Sophie Jones, whose smile lights up a room!
On November 4, 2023, an early celebration party for Sophie was held at her residence at Southern Manor in Statesboro. About 30 family and friends attended to recognize and honor her remarkable life. Sophie’s actual birthday is November 9, 1923.
Born in Millhaven, Georgia, she spent a good part of her life in Sylvania on ‘Hobby Hill.’ Jokingly, her daughter said, "Y'all drink from the water on ‘Hobby Hill?” since there have been several centennials who lived there!
Sophie married her Georgia Southern University sweetheart. “I was a little freshman and he was two years ahead of me," she smiled. “James Allen Jones of Statesboro,” she declared.
They were happily married for 53 years, had two children, Glenn and Joni, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Jimmy was in the Army Air Corps in WWII and left as a captain. Sophie's career was working on the bases, substitute teaching in the '80s, and being a loving wife and mother. She was a great seamstress in those days, making her daughter's clothing, and was always a huge LOVER of flowers and her Garden Club, winning many awards for her flowers and garden.
Joni shared that Sophie always loved yellow roses, especially ‘oregolds,’ and her garden had nearly 60 rose bushes. Playing the piano, making floral arrangements, and decorating, she definitely had a creative flair to add to her charm. In addition to her floral and homemaking pursuits, Sophie told me, she LOVES the Atlanta Braves!
Sophie is an inspiration of friendliness and kindness. “A true Southern Lady Hostess,” said her daughter Joni.
Let's wish Sophie a very happy and healthy belated 100th birthday!
