SHS student Sanan Khairabadi was 1 of 5 students selected from 15 finalists to present her research and compete in the BioGENEius Challenge, a science research competition for high school students across the United States from October 28-30.

The competition was held at CURE in New York City where she presented her project entitled “Comparative Genomic Analysis of LDPE-Degrading Pseudomonas” to judges comprised of industry and academic subject matter experts. She was selected through the Georgia Science Fair that took place in Athens, GA last spring.

Her project was submitted under the Global Environmental Challenge. Sanan and three other finalists received $500 in prize money. The students also toured labs at CURE and learned about different careers in biotechnology, and also received a tour of the American Museum of Natural History.

Beyond fostering innovative research, the institute strives to reach a broad spectrum of audiences to bridge the intellectual gap in life sciences between the general public and the biotechnology community.

About the BioGENEius Challenge

Well established as the Biotechnology Institute's "flagship" program, the BioGENEius Challenge  Series provides high school age students with expanded opportunity to compete and be recognized for outstanding research in biotechnology.

Congratulations, Sanan!
