Hello, I’m Senator Billy Hickman, proud to represent Georgia’s 4th Senate District. This past week has been packed with committee meetings and bill debates, and there’s no slowing down.
On Tuesday morning, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and Higher Education met to review budget requests for the remainder of the 2025 Fiscal Year. I want to thank everyone from our education departments and organizations who took the time to speak with us. These conversations are critical in providing our students, educators, and parents with the resources they need for success inside and outside the classroom.
Later that evening, the Senate Committee on Education and Youth heard presentations from the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia, GA TAPP, Tutors to Teachers, and the Professional Standards Commission. They shared updates on teacher and leadership recruitment efforts, which are so important as we work to strengthen Georgia’s education system.
This week, I also had the pleasure of welcoming the Georgia Young Farmer Teacher Program, or GYFT, to the Capitol. GYFT plays an important role in equipping Georgia farmers with the skills and resources they need to succeed—whether it’s learning about new farm equipment or staying informed on key legislative issues. Their commitment to providing region-specific training guarantees that our farmers from all corners of the state get the support they need.
On the legislative front, I am happy to share that my bill, the Dignity and Pay Act, has been heard by the Senate Committee on Insurance & Labor. This bill is about fairness—making sure that Georgians with disabilities receive a fair wage for the work they do.
I’ve also co-sponsored Senate Bill 123, which updates our school attendance policies. Chronic absenteeism is a growing issue and it’s doubled in our state since 2019. This bill makes sure no student is expelled simply for being absent while helping schools develop better strategies to keep kids in the classroom and on track for success.
It’s an honor to serve you and be your voice at the Capitol. Thank you for your support, and as always, God bless you and the great state of Georgia!
