Savannah's long-beloved Huey’s bringing flavors of New Orleans to Statesboro

Huey’s on the River, a popular New Orleans-style restaurant in Savannah, is opening a new location on South Main Street in downtown Statesboro. The restaurant will offer a similar menu to the Savannah original, including their famous beignets, and will feature casual dining with lunch, dinner, and brunch options. Key partners JJ King, Casey Pope, and River Green are overseeing the project, with Chef Michael Gottlieb and Chef Shawn Guzman developing the menu.

Huey’s on the River, a popular restaurant in Savannah known for its authentic New Orleans cuisine, is officially on its way to Statesboro. Huey’s in the Boro is opening in downtown Statesboro right on South Main Street, adjacent to the Quality Inn & Suites, making it a highly anticipated addition to the Blue Mile scene.

Huey’s is making great progress toward opening and is predicted to be service-ready in Fall 2024.

The restaurant is being brought to the area by the original Savannah owners, Tom Scarborough and Bob Isaacson. Isaacson joined the project back in 1993, and Scarborough, who is from the area, has always wanted to open another location.

After being approached by the people remodeling the hotel next door, they knew it was the right opportunity to finally open another Huey’s, leading to a partnership between all of them. The remodel of the restaurant officially began in Fall 2023.

This second location is opening in a well-known spot to many locals, as the building used to house a different local restaurant, Manny’s. JJ King, a key operating partner overseeing the opening, construction, and design of Huey’s in the Boro, shared that they have been dedicated to ensuring the space has a fresh feel.

“We’re entering into a space where many locals are familiar with it. And for good or bad, many already have their thoughts on what the place should or can be. But our team feels strongly about ensuring everything about this project is quality," King expressed. "We have completely gutted the place and started from scratch. Everything brought in is brand new, and more than anything, we’re just looking forward to bringing Statesboro something new, fun, and unique. It’s definitely been a huge project, but it’s been so exciting and fulfilling to watch it come to life.”

She has been working on this project alongside Scarborough’s daughters, Casey Pope and River Green, to ensure that every detail is just as the team envisions.

Huey's world-famous beignets

Huey’s in the Boro will have a traditional, casual sit-down feel but will still be a place to enjoy a nice dinner. The menu promises lunch, dinner, and brunch, and they will have a small bar featuring classic Louisiana cocktails.

King states the menu will be extremely similar to the original location in Savannah, but there may be a few changes to make the Statesboro menu unique. The menu is being developed by Chef Michael Gottlieb, who is originally from New Orleans but now lives in the Savannah area and has become well-known for his cooking and cuisine.

Chef Shawn Guzman, currently overseeing the Nonna Picci kitchen, has also been assisting with the menu and will be moving to oversee the Huey’s in the Boro kitchen once it opens.

One thing that will remain is their world-famous beignets. King shared they have recently been taste-testing and declared that they are just like the ones in their sister establishment in Savannah. King also mentioned that they plan to randomly hand out beignets at Nonna’s throughout the process to build excitement among the people of Statesboro for their arrival.
