Saturday in Statesboro: Scare on the Square, Bulloch Youth Fishing Rodeo, and Family Fun Resource Day

There were several community events happening in Statesboro on Saturday, October 14th. Grice Connect's Brandon Robinson gives a brief recap on the Scare on the Square event, the Bulloch Bass Club Youth Fishing Rodeo 2023, and the Village Builders "Family Fun Resource Day" event.

2023 Bulloch Bass Club Youth Fishing Rodeo

The Gary Oglesby Memorial Youth Fishing Rodeo was held at the Mill Creek Park pond on Saturday October 14th. The Bulloch Bass Club invited local children age 5-15 to participate in a morning of FREE family-fun and fishing at the annual event.

"The Bulloch Bass Masters meant so much to my husband, Gary Oglesby. He was one of the original founders and was in it for more than 40 years before he passed last year. The Bulloch Bass Club, the Southern Cruisers Car Club, and his family was the core of his life. We miss him dearly but he has brought a lot to the community and Bulloch County with the young kids fishing rodeo," Patricia Oglesby said.

"I grew up doing the tournaments when I was younger and then I became a helper as I got older," daughter Shay added. "To this day, we still see people who have kids whose first fish was caught out here of doing one of the kids tournaments."

"We are so excited to have Party Impressions Scare on the Square downtown today. We have thousands of people here today. We have the Bulloch County Literacy Council giving out free books to the children, which is important as the Scare on the Square has evolved into more of an educational event to help with county literacy initiatives. We have hayrides, a costume contest, a food court, and Word of Mouth Therapy here doing special actives for children with sensory needs. We appreciate our community and sponsors for this great event," said Elena McClendon of Mainstreet Statesboro.

The event was sponsored by local party and costume store Party Impressions.

"When we at Party Impressions were approached about becoming sponsors, it was a no brainer for us," said co-owner Amanda Dyches. "Being a part of a family-friendly event with fun costumes encompasses what we stand for as a business. This was a great way for us to give back to the community."
