Mariah McRae, RN, was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

A nurse within the intensive care unit and at EGRMC for almost five years, Mariah received nominations from her patients for the award. In fact, Mariah has received several DAISY pin nominations, but this is her first official DAISY award.

A colleague stated, “She is a joy to work with. She is compassionate and knowledgeable and someone I look forward to working with. She is an asset to the ICU and we are lucky to have her.”

A patient described one of the many moments she witnessed Mariah’s compassionate care for her father, “My dad traveled 2.5 hours away from home to have a major cardiac procedure done. After he suffered a stroke, Mariah was one of his nurses. He was scared, unsure of the circumstances, but Mariah’s assurance was exceptional. She was very compassionate, informative and always there for the many questions we had. In a world full of nurses in situations like ours, you would truly want a nurse like Marish by your side. Today and everyday nurses like her deserve to be recognized and appreciated for their dedication to their patients.”

When presented with the DAISY award Mariah stated, “I am speechless and I could not do it without the amazing team of people I have to work with in the ICU.”

“Mariah truly embodies the kindness and compassion we all hope for in a nurse,” said Marie Burdett, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. “Her dedication is well-deserving of this recognition, and we are fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

Nurses may be nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, family members, and colleagues. The award recipient is chosen by a committee at EGRMC.

"We're proud to participate in The DAISY Award program," said Stephen Pennington, CEO of East Georgia Regional Medical Center. "Nurses are true everyday heroes, and it's essential they know how much their work matters. The DAISY Foundation gives us a special way to show our appreciation. We're thrilled to honor Mariah with this award and deeply grateful for the compassionate care she provides to all her patients at EGRMC."

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
