About The Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern University

Step back in time and discover the legacy of Dan and Catharine Bland, whose love story blossomed alongside their farmstead.

Their journey began in 1916 at what is now Georgia Southern University, originally the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. Imagine a young couple, united by a passion for agriculture, starting a life together on the Southeastern Coastal Plain.

Undeterred by the challenges of the sandy soil, they poured their hearts into their farm. They nurtured a small dairy herd, raised livestock, and cultivated fields of pecans, pears, and other crops. Their dedication earned them acclaim as a "model farm" by Georgia Magazine in 1929 – a testament to their resilience and innovation.

The couple were passionate nature enthusiasts and captivated by the region's unique flora and fauna. They meticulously incorporated native plants into the landscape, transforming it into a haven of biodiversity. Today, these native plants, along with some of their cherished favorites, thrive in the 11-acre oasis we call the Botanic Garden. Explore this living testament to love, perseverance, and the enduring beauty of nature.
