January of each year is National Stalking Awareness Month. Safe Haven in Statesboro is providing the following information as part of its dedication to ending the cycle of family violence through prevention and education programs.

What is stalking?

Stalking refers to a repeated pattern of behavior aimed at a specific individual, which would lead a reasonable person to feel concerned for their own safety or the safety of others, or to experience significant emotional distress.

Stalkers employ various tactics, including (but not limited to):

  • Unsolicited communication through phone calls, texts, or social media
  • Unwanted gifts
  • Appearing near or approaching the victim or their family and friends
  • Monitoring and surveillance
  • Damaging property
  • Making threats

Who can be stalked?

Anyone can fall victim to stalking. Most stalking victims are targeted by someone they know, such as a current or former intimate partner, acquaintance, or family member.

Estimates suggest that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will encounter stalking at some point in their lives.
