National Senior Citizens Day is an annual celebration on August 21 in the United States. This unofficial holiday was created to recognize, honor and show appreciation for our elders' contributions and achievements. It's a day to say ‘thank you’ for their wisdom and for all they add to our society.

What can Statesboro, Bulloch County, and surrounding areas do to celebrate our ‘Golden Treasures’ and say thank you? Here are just a few of my suggestions!

  • Spend quality time! (My favorite!) Visit or call.
  • Listen to their stories! Ask about their talents, hobbies, or skills.
  • Offer to help! Run errands or complete small chores.
  • Treat them to a breakfast or lunch date! Bring a favorite treat to brighten their day.
  • Simply say THANKS to the Seniors in your life!

For many years (44+), I was an active mom, wife, corporate professional, and pet mother, then grandma to twins (twin toddler wrangler!) and a member of the sandwich generation (meaning I was a parent caregiver, too) -- not to mention all the added ‘fanfare of life.’ Stepping into ‘Senior Life,’ where ALL that I had, had 'moved on and grown’, I needed to recalibrate and find a new path. I call this my ‘2nd Act.’

Editor's Note: Michele is our shining example of what it means to be an active senior. She gets out into her community to meet new people and enjoy life, and she rarely turns down an invitation for a new experience. Here she is enjoying The Tams at Downtown Live -- on a school night!

My current mission is writing stories for and about the senior adult population in our community for Grice Connect. Appreciating, encouraging, and guiding the Seniors (our Golden Treasures) to new opportunities by embracing and supporting them while adjusting to retirement or their struggles and setbacks -- that's what it's all about!

My focus is to encourage the Seniors of Bulloch County about the wonderful lifestyle that is still available to them, while enjoying immensely being a ‘Cool Grandma’ to my guys. CHALLENGING but FUN!

Happy Senior Citizens Day to the integral part of our community. We honor your memories and are very grateful for the wonderful life you have given us!
