Georgia Southern's student chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science has been recognized with the Magna Cum Laude award by the INFORMS, the world’s largest professional society for professionals in operations research, management science, and business analytics. You can see Georgia Southern's listing here.
Dr. Xinfang Wang and Dr. Kwabena Boakye serve as faculty advisors for the chapter.
According to its website, INFORMS recognizes and rewards individuals, organizations, academic institutions who are advancing the fields of operations research and analytics, and furthering the mission of INFORMS.
Awards given by INFORMS are intended to celebrate achievements in the areas of teaching, writing, and practice of distinguished service to the institute and the profession and contributions to the welfare of society. The student chapter awards, which is what Georgia Southern received, recognize students for their achievements as a group.
"This award puts our student chapter, the Information Systems and Analytics Department, and the Parker College of Business in the national and worldwide spotlight," Dr. Wang said. "This year's honor is a level above what we earned in 2023."
According to Drs. Wang and Boakye, the chapter's theme, “Connect, Grow, and Give Back,” emphasizes the importance of supporting the local community.
"Last year, our chapter collected an impressive 3,000 cans for the Statesboro Food Bank. Despite facing challenges this year due to Hurricane Helene, we successfully collected 600 cans," Dr. Wang shared of a recent project.
The INFORMS Georgia Southern University student chapter was founded on February 5, 2021. The chapter is composed of mainly undergraduate students in the Parker College of Business on the Statesboro campus, with an emphasis in analytics.
