The Georgia Southern Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology’s Inclusive Excellence Committee is proud to welcome Dr. Danielle Slakoff to our 2023 Critical Conversations Event.
Dr. Slakoff is a leading expert on media and the criminal justice system. She will be presenting on Missing White Woman Syndrome, the phenomenon in which the public gives disproportionate attention to cases involving the victimization of white women, while virtually ignoring crimes committed against minority victims. Her conversation is entitled, "Addressing Media Bias: How Women and Girls of Color are Differentially Portrayed as Victims of Crime."
Dr. Slakoff is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University-Sacramento. Her areas of expertise are media and crime; feminist criminology and women’s issues; race and ethnicity, and intimate partner violence. Dr. Slakoff’s work has been published in journals such as Violence Against Women, Feminist Criminology, and Race and Justice. She has also been featured by the New York Times, Washington Post, and Time Magazine. Dr. Slakoff recently received the Division on Women & Crime’s 2022 Saltzman Award for Contributions to Practice from the American Society of Criminology.
Dr. Slakoff will give two presentations on Monday April 24th, as a part of the Spring 2023 Critical Conversation. The first will be held on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong campus at 11:15 a.m., with coffee and refreshments available. Her second presentation will be on the Statesboro campus at 5:00 p.m. and will include a reception with food and beverages for guests. Please see the attached flyers for further details.
