The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will host an in-person Public Information Open House (PIOH) for the proposed SR 404 Spur/US 17 at Savannah River Crossing Project (PI 0017183), which explores potential long-term improvement alternatives for the existing bridge over the Savannah River. The public is invited to attend the open house on May 20, 2024, from 6 to 8pm at the Coastal Georgia Center at 305 Fahm Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401. The purpose of this PIOH is to give the public an opportunity to review the project background and potential solutions as well as submit feedback.

As the fastest growing port in the nation, the Port of Savannah is a significant economic engine for the Savannah region, the state of Georgia, and the nation. Potentially stifling future growth, however, is the Port’s accessibility to larger ships. These larger ships, which are becoming increasingly common on the world’s oceans, are limited by the existing 185-foot clearance of SR 404 Spur/US 17 bridge. The proposed project seeks to address this limitation. The project team is evaluating alternatives so that the project can proceed into conceptual engineering design and preliminary environmental studies.

The PIOH will offer an opportunity for the public to not only review project materials, but also ask questions of designated subject-matter experts in attendance. There will be no formal presentation. For those unable to attend, materials are also available on the project website at https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing.

Comments about the proposed project will be accepted until Wednesday, June 5, 2024. There are several ways the public can submit comments on the project:

  • Leave a written comment or speak to a court reporter at the in-person PIOH on May 20, 2024.
  • Complete the online comment form located on the project website: https://bit.ly/SavannahRiverCrossing
  • Email comments to project email address: [email protected]
  • Call the project hotline at 404-631-1526 to leave a recorded comment (please provide name and contact information)
  • Mail written comments to the Georgia Department of Transportation; Attention: Eric Duff, State Environmental Administrator, 600 West Peachtree Street, NE – 16th Floor, Atlanta, Ga., 30308
