The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced today that the coastal bridges closed as a precautionary measure ahead of Hurricane Idalia have returned to normal traffic operation after extensive inspection. Additionally, the Houlihan bridge on SR 25 has been reopened for maritime traffic.
The coastal bridges reopened for vehicular traffic include:- The cable-stayed bridge on State Route (SR) 25 that spans the Brunswick/Turtle River in Brunswick-Glynn County
- US 17/SR 404 Spur cable-stayed bridge that spans the Savannah River in Savannah-Chatham County
A thorough inspection of the state's bridges in the storm's path must be conducted to guarantee the safety of Georgia's motoring public. Prior to Idalia, the department identified 49 bridges in southern and coastal Georgia that warrant inspection after an extreme weather event. Additionally, 2,227 bridges, 376 interstate and 6,450 state route miles are being assessed in the aftermath of the storm.Georgia511.
