The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is moving forward with a proposal to widen Interstate 16 from two to three lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Interstate 95 and State Route 67 in southeast Georgia. This significant infrastructure project spans approximately 30 miles across Bulloch, Bryan, Effingham, and Chatham counties.

The project is currently in the early concept development phase, with various environmental and technical studies underway.

The proposed widening aims to improve existing substandard pavement conditions and address growing traffic volumes along this corridor, which serves as an important link to and from the Georgia Ports. As part of the project, GDOT will also widen or replace 20 bridges at 10 different locations within the project limits.

GDOT anticipates that the addition of a lane in each direction will increase mobility and enhance the level of service for commuters and freight traffic. Importantly, current plans indicate no anticipated right-of-way impacts to properties along the corridor.

GDOT will hold two public meetings about this project:

  • Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 4-6pm at the Bulloch County Center for Agriculture, 151 Langston Chapel Road, Statesboro, GA 30458
  • Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 4-6pm at Bloomingdale City Hall, 8 West US Highway 80, Bloomingdale, GA 31302

The public is invited to attend anytime during these hours, and there will be no formal presentation. The project team will be available to provide information and answer questions about the project. A court reporter will be available to allow the public an opportunity to provide verbal comments about the project.

The Design-Build team is expected to be on board by the second quarter of 2026, with construction slated to begin in 2027.
