GALLERY | Debby left a wake of flooding across Bulloch County, breached dams, destroyed roads

Reader-submitted images tell the story of the vast and devastating impact of Debby's historic rainfall across Bulloch County and the surrounding area.

The Grice Connect team is deeply grateful for the overwhelming response to the request for photos and the map we shared yesterday. Nearly 40,000 people viewed the interactive map, and we were touched by the flood of messages identifying areas throughout our community impacted by Tropical Storm Debby, as well as images that document this historic event.

Grice Connect was born from the heart of our community, forged during Hurricane Matthew, with the mission of delivering timely and crucial news. Once again, we find ourselves at a crucial juncture as we grapple with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby in Statesboro. The storm has left behind sinkholes on many roads, extensive flooding, and rendered dirt roads either impassable or washed out.

The incredible images and information you shared prompted us to create a map pinpointing the reported road damage. We're immensely grateful for the 20,000 views, but it's important to bear in mind that we are a small local news team striving to update the map based on community feedback.

We also want to extend a huge shout-out to our "Grice Good" community members, including law enforcement, paramedics, firefighters, and public works who are working tirelessly in response to Tropical Storm Debby, monitoring roadways, clearing roads, and responding to emergency calls. Their efforts are truly commendable.

When using our map, please remember:

  • We're doing our best to keep up with the closures.
  • The map's accuracy is limited to feedback from residents and local officials.
  • Please restrict travel to major roads where feasible, as the map indicates widespread issues countywide.
  • Conditions may change rapidly before we can update, so be aware of the dynamic situation.
  • The map's goal is to highlight the challenging road conditions based on reported trouble areas.

For your safety:

  • Please heed road closed signs and avoid driving around them.
  • If you encounter flooded roads, turn around and do not attempt to cross.
  • Exercise caution, especially at night, when it's harder to identify flooding dangers. Be mindful of your surroundings and refrain from driving on flooded roads.

Let's continue to support one another through this challenging time. Stay safe, everyone!
