Statesboro and Bulloch County firefighters responded to fire at the Statesboro Summit apartments on Friday night. One resident was transported by Bulloch County EMS to EGRMC.
At 10:05 PM on Friday, December 22, 2023 Bulloch County 911 operators dispatched Statesboro and Bulloch Fire Departments to a fire alarm call at the Statesboro Summit apartments located at 241 North Main. The six story complex houses primarily senior adults.
When the first fire engine arrived on the scene they reported an audible fire alarm, smoke and water flow from the sprinkler system. They requested additional fire engines and firefighters to the scene.
Upon entering the building firefighters found smoke on the first and fourth floors of the six story structure. The smoke was determined to be coming from a maintenance area on the first floor which houses a large garbage bin.
It appeared that the sprinkler system had extinguished a fire in the trash bin. Not before heavy smoke traveled up the trash shoot to the fourth floor of the building.
Firefighters made sure the fire was extinguished and then began clearing the building of smoke.
One resident was transported by Bulloch County EMS with non-life threatening symptoms to East Georgia Regional Medical Center (EGRMC) by Bulloch County EMS.
Statesboro Police Department officers responded to assist with traffic and crowd control.
Firefighters remained on the scene a little over an hour clearing the structure of smoke.
SFD will conduct a routine investigation of the fire.
Second Fire Response
While firefighters were on the scene at the Summit they received a second possible structure fire call to Broad Street in the City of Statesboro. Multiple fire engines left the Summit and responded to Broad Street at 10:35 pm. The fire was believed to have originated in an oven and was extinguished when the first engine arrived on the scene. All other responding engines were diverted back to the Summit.
