Excelsior EMC Hurricane Helene update

As we move into the first night of outages, we're making progress. So far, we've restored power to around 3,000 of our members. While this may seem like just a drop in the bucket, it's an important step forward.

Crews will continue to work into the night. The challenges we're facing are significant: a huge number of broken poles, countless limbs on lines, and downed lines all across our service territory. These issues are incredibly time-consuming to fix. For instance, repairing a single broken pole takes hours and an entire crew. Today alone, we found 20 broken poles—that's hours upon hours of work, just for those poles.

We want to emphasize that this is one of the worst storms in our service territory’s history, and the extent of the damage means power restoration will take time. We have more help on the way from several states, and once they arrive things should start to move faster.

We know that many of you, just like us, are facing a long, hot night without power, and we truly sympathize with how challenging that can be. Here are a few tips that might help you sleep a little more comfortably tonight:

  • Open windows for cross-ventilation to let in the cooler night air.
  • Dampen a washcloth with cool water and place it on your forehead or neck.
  • Sleep on cotton sheets, which are more breathable.
  • If you have ice, keep a small bowl next to your bed to cool your wrists and face.
  • Try to sleep in the coolest part of your home, even if it means setting up on the floor.

Together, we'll get through this. Stay safe, everyone!
