The Christian Social Ministry continues its mission to support the local community by expanding its services to a new location. John Long, the organization’s founder, shared insight into its purpose, challenges, and impact on those in need.
Long says the primary mission of the Christian Social Ministry is to glorify Jesus Christ above all else. Beyond that, the organization is dedicated to serving the community, especially less fortunate individuals and families. The ministry seeks to meet people where they are and provide resources that can make a tangible difference in their lives.
The new thrift store location on Northside Drive in Statesboro mirrors the ministry’s existing services, which have been a staple in the community for 16 years. Operating as a 501(c-3) nonprofit, the organization receives donations sold at reasonable prices through its thrift store, ensuring affordability for those in need.
The funds generated go directly into the community, supporting various outreach programs such as food assistance and emergency aid. While expanding a nonprofit organization comes with challenges, Long expressed that the process for opening the new location was unexpectedly smooth.
“I wouldn’t even call it a challenge because I love the hard work,” Long said.
He initially considered the location for another ministry but quickly realized it was an ideal fit for the Christian Social Ministry. In less than 20 days, the space was ready for operation, leading to a soft opening in mid-January. According to Long, it was the smoothest opening the organization has ever had, reinforcing his belief that everything fell into place with divine guidance.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the ministry held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a significant milestone in its continued effort to serve the community. The event was attended by local supporters, volunteers, and community members eager to celebrate the expansion.
There are several ways community members can support the ministry’s mission. The organization relies heavily on volunteers to maintain its thrift stores and food pantry.
“Volunteerism is a huge need at all times,” Long emphasized.
Monetary and material donations are also essential in keeping the ministry running efficiently. The food pantry benefits from food drives organized by local groups, while financial contributions help sustain the outreach efforts. Currently, the ministry employs six individuals—four full-time and two part-time—and plans to add another position soon to meet the growing service demand.
The Christian Social Ministry is crucial in supplementing resources for community members in need. Many senior citizens rely on the food pantry’s bi-monthly drive-through distribution to help stretch their limited incomes. The ministry also provides utility assistance to struggling families, including those who have never previously sought help but now find it difficult to make ends meet.
Long noted that more two-income households are seeking aid, demonstrating the increasing financial pressures many in the community face. In addition to its ongoing local services, the Christian Social Ministry is actively involved in disaster relief efforts.
Recently, the organization has been collecting donations for Pikeville, Kentucky, which suffered severe flooding. Six or seven containers of supplies are already prepared for delivery through a partnership with a local substance abuse ministry.
The ministry also supports local students in need by working with the Bulloch County Board of Education to provide shoes through school counselors.
The Christian Social Ministry remains steadfast in serving and uplifting the community. Whether through volunteering, donations, or spreading awareness, there are numerous ways for individuals to contribute to this faith-driven initiative. As Long stated, “We look for every opportunity of service to our community,” ensuring that the ministry continues to make a lasting impact on those who need it most.
