The Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern will welcome youngsters to its fall session of the Children's Vegetable Garden beginning October 5. Participants will have the opportunity to grow, harvest, and taste produce in their own special area of the garden.

The fall session of the Children’s Vegetable Garden at the Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern will soon begin.

This is a free, weekly educational program for children in kindergarten through 5th grade, held in the fall and spring of each year.

The group will meet on Thursdays from 4-5pm, beginning October 5th and running through November 30th. Each week, children will have the opportunity to work with garden educators to plant, water, fertilize, pick, and eat the produce in the garden. Tasting is an important part of the Children’s Garden!

Garden Educator Kathy Tucker works with Children's Garden participants to harvest corn

In previous years, young gardeners have grown produce such as turnips, corn, cabbage, kale, tomatoes, peppers, and berries. Each session provides not only a chance to get their hands dirty in the garden but also the opportunity to learn about plant and environmental sciences.

This fall’s program theme is “Piecing Together a Garden,” and children will “solve the puzzle” of a good garden.

While there is no charge for children to participate, donations are welcome.
