This week, the Bulloch County Tax Commissioner's office is warning taxpayers of a scam that is circulating via mail.
The office has received multiple calls and messages about citizens receiving documents threatening seizure of benefits or garnishment of wages due to unpaid tax debt. When a representative from the office attempted to call the number on the scam document, the line went straight to either music or a long ringing tone.
In a Facebook post, Tax Commissioner Leslie Akins said, "Bulloch County does not have a Tax Assessment Seizure Unit, and this is most definitely a scam. We just want to be sure no one gives out any financial or personal identifying information over the phone with something like this. You can never be too careful these days with your personal information."
An example of the letter was provided by the Tax Commissioner and is below. If you receive this letter, do not provide any personal information to anyone at the number listed. You may contact the Bulloch County Tax Commissioner's office directly at (912) 764-6285 to verify any documents you receive.
