The core aspects of what makes the Bulloch County Recreation and Parks Department a centerpiece for many members of the community and visitors alike is now showcased in full effect with a new mural inside the department's administration office, also known as the Honey Bowen Building.

This newly designed mural incorporates many of the activities that community members have experienced and enjoyed over the department's 75-year history.

In 1946 Generia Honeycutt "Honey” Bowen had a vision to create something to take care of families and young people in our community through the development of a recreation department. Honey Bowen would take action on the vision she had for the community by meeting Bill Bowen, her husband, who was on the City Council.

One morning, Honey told Bill it was time for him to get to the office. Little did he know that Honey Bowen would show up at his office for a meeting that same morning. She would arrive at the office on what she described as strictly ‘business’, and she would push the initiative that day for the creation of the department.

The impact of Honey Bowen is still felt throughout the entire reach of BCRP today, as her slogan of ‘Our investment in our youth, is our voice to our future’ still stands the test of time.

Bulloch County Recreation and Parks Director Dadrian Cosby orchestrated the development of the mural as he grew fatigued of seeing the same blank wall over his 20-plus year tenure with the department. He waited to create something that would pay homage to Honey Bowen and represent the core aspects of our parks and recreation.

“This wall is special because it incorporates programs, activities, and special events we provide in Bulloch County. I want patrons of our building to walk by the mural and see an activity they may have participated in, and let that memory take them back to a special moment as a kid or a current fun and relaxing time,” said Cosby.

As the department continues to grow, creating new memories for every patron that arrives, the vision of  Honey Bowen is on full display out and about our community, and it is fully captured inside with the new mural display in the administration office, as well.
