The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority (DSDA) recently welcomed the American Killer Bees Fitness martial arts studio to West Main Street.
The studio is located in downtown Statesboro at 39 West Main Street, Unit A, and offers memberships for kickboxing and muay thai group classes. Kickboxing sessions provide high intensity full body cardio, low level plyometrics, and body weight calisthenics, while muay thai sessions incorporate cardio and strength training to facilitate a more technically based workout, focusing on skill acquisition in the striking art. AKB is currently offering a free trial class, $59/mo promotion for unlimited kickboxing, and an $89/mo promotion for unlimited muay thai and kickboxing.
Head Striking Coach and Co-Owner Joel Toledo has over 30 years of experience in various material arts including taekwondo, boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and muay thai. Toledo has been a certified personal trainer since 2002 and obtained his boxing coach status from the United States Olympic Committee.
Co-Owner Coach Curtis Scott is a sports performance coach, personal trainer, and nutritionist serving as a part of Georgia Southern football team’s strength and conditioning staff, as well as Head Strength Coach for Southeast Bulloch High School Basketball.

“I personally feel a sense of gratitude and satisfaction in our ability to create a haven of health, fitness, community, and stress relief to our friends and neighbors here in town. I hope everyone who walks through our doors feels like they are a part of our family and leave our doors with a good sweat, a smile on their face and a feeling of relief both mentally and physically,” Scott told the DSDA.
Killer Bees Fitness originated in Brazil under the guidance of Israel Gomes, who coached Toledo. The name Killer Bee is derived from the hybrid of Honey Bees from Africa and Brazil, symbolizing the mixed martial arts offered by the gym.
"There are Killer Bees gyms all over the world; we call them 'Hives' because they are not chains. Each gym is its own entity," Toledo explained.
The owners' aspirations for the gym are to expand as much as possible and become a cornerstone in the community.
"We have just opened, but I would love to contribute to street festivals and other events happening Downtown as much as possible," Toledo said.
Toledo and Scott say they are committed to supporting downtown initiatives and fully embracing the essence of being a business downtown.
