In an unexpected and heartwarming announcement, The Food Bank, Inc. is thrilled to share that we have received two significant awards of federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The Bulloch County Commissioners have awarded $250,000, and the City of Statesboro has generously contributed an additional $180,000.
These funds, totaling $430,000, will support crisis relief in our community and enable us to complete the construction of our new facility at 506 Miller Street.
The Food Bank, Inc. has long been dedicated to serving neighbors across our region during their most vulnerable moments. This year alone, we have faced monumental challenges, including hurricanes and devastating flooding that have displaced families and strained resources. Despite these obstacles, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that no one in our region goes without nutritious food or a helping hand in their time of need.
These gifts are more than just financial support; they are symbols of belief in our cause to alleviate hunger, foster hope, and improve the health and well-being of our region. Both the Bulloch County Commissioners and the City of Statesboro have deemed The Food Bank a vital partner in disaster response and crisis relief, affirming our role in supporting our community during challenging times.
The federal ARPA funds will allow us to bring our new facility to life. This space is designed to enhance our ability to respond to crises, serve families, and provide sustainable solutions for our community’s most pressing needs. The funds are designated specifically for the construction of public areas, including a teaching library, classrooms, a commercial kitchen, and a dining hall—key spaces that will empower us to expand our services and programs. Please note that these funds will not cover the cost of food, utilities, or other operational expenses.
"We are overwhelmed with gratitude for these surprise gifts," said Sheila Stewart-Leach, Executive Director of The Food Bank, Inc. "This funding will allow us to expand our services and stand even stronger as a source of hope and relief for our community. It’s a testament to the trust the commissioners, city leaders, and our neighbors have placed in us, and we couldn’t be more thankful."
