Margarete Albrecht Moeller, a 2-year resident of The Gardens in Statesboro, GA, recently celebrated her centennial 100th birthday with 35 residents and guests. Her family lovingly describes her as "light-hearted, easy-going, and always ready to socialize."

Cindy Carter, The Gardens Activities Coordinator, shared, “There’s an unspoken respect by all the residents for her.”

Margarete was born in Germany on January 8, 1925. In 1949, she married William (Willi) Moeller in Franzenburg, Germany, and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage, building a family of two daughters, Susan and Linda, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Margarete studied nursing and cared for babies in orphanages before coming to New York in 1950. After several years, the Moellers moved to Maine and built their chicken farm with approximately 6,000 egg layers, so there were plenty of eggs for baking.

“My favorite memories of my mom are when she baked traditional German bread. She had a wonderful collection of cake and pastry recipes, and the kitchen was warm and inviting when she baked and cooked,” shared Susan Huelsewiesche, her daughter.

After selling the farm in Maine, Margarete enjoyed traveling extensively, visiting almost all the United States, Canada, and many overseas destinations. Her treasured memories were of the national parks and wildlife, with Alaska being her favorite.

Reflecting on her life, Margarete said, “In 100 years, I have many happy memories. Those were very happy times.”

She took photos, recorded videos, and created oil paintings. In 1971, the Moellers moved to Register in Bulloch County, where they built their poultry farm. “No snow in Georgia,” she laughed. “We moved at the right time.”

Retirement brought more activities and learning, including taking art classes at Georgia Southern University. She enjoyed kayaking and even taught her great-grandson, Ezra, to crochet—he's a pro now!

Margarete loves bingo, exercises twice a week, and enjoys sweet treats like pastries.

Carter added, “Always quick to share a smile and never misses BINGO!”

When asked the secret to her longevity, Margarete giggled, “I know better than to give out advice!”

Happy centennial birthday, Margarete! May you continue to find joy and happy times in all you do!
