Qualifying ended at 4:30 PM on Friday, August 25, 2023 for the Cities of Brooklet, Portal, Register and Statesboro for Municipal General Elections will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
Statesboro Council Seat 2 Incumbent Paulette Chavers will be challenged by Lawton Sack. Incumbent Venus Mack decided not to run against Ginny Hendley for Seat 3. Hendley will run unopposed. Incumbent Shari Barr is unopposed.
Lawton Sack notified Grice Connect that he has vacated his seat on the Bulloch County Elections Board to run for City Council.
Candidates who wished to qualify for a municipal office must have filed their notice of candidacy with the Election Superintendent in each respective city at their City Hall this week.
Brooklet
Incumbent Brooklet Mayor Joe Grooms did not seek reelection. City Council member Nicky Gwinnett was the only person to qualify for Mayor so he will run unopposed. Incumbent City Council Member Bradley Anderson was the sole qualifier for Seat 2 so he will run unopposed.
No one qualified for Seat 1. According to Georgia Code they will be required to open qualifying for Seat 1 from 9 am on Monday and 9 AM on Tuesday ending at 5:00 PM on both days.
Portal
In Portal none of the incumbents drew opposition. Mayor Billy Boggs, Roy Johnson, Seat 2 and Delina Woods, Seat 5 will all be returning to office.
Register
In Register incumbents Tonya Boyd, Seat 3 and Alfred Jones, Seat 4 both drew no opposition. The last correspondence we had with Register officials, no one had qualified for Seat 5 which is an open seat.
Register will also be required to open qualifying again on Monday at 9 am for Seat 5 and continue on Tuesday till 5 PM.
Qualifying ended on Friday, August 25th at 4:30 p.m.
