A Bulloch County home was completely destroyed by fire Tuesday morning, January 7, 2025, in the 6000 block of Highway 24, near the intersection of Clito Road. The fire, reported at 10:16 a.m., prompted a rapid response from both the Bulloch County and Statesboro Fire Departments.
Bulloch County Battalion Chief Jason Gammon was the first to arrive on the scene, just minutes after the initial call. Upon arrival, he confirmed that the home was fully involved in flames and immediately requested additional resources. The fire was reportedly well advanced by the time the first crews arrived, due to the home’s unique two-roof structure, which allowed the fire to spread before smoke became visible.
“Citizens saw smoke coming from the roof of the house and called 911. They didn’t just stop there – they knocked on doors and windows to make sure no one was inside. They were even able to rescue a pet from the home,” said Chief Gammon. He expressed gratitude to the Good Samaritans who took quick action and to the volunteer firefighters who responded to the scene. “I want to thank them for their efforts,” he added.
Firefighters from multiple units responded, including Bulloch County Engines 2, 3, 7, and 11, along with Tankers 3 and 9. Battalion Chief Gammon and Command 3 Chief Joe Carter coordinated the operation, which also involved Statesboro Engine 5 and 10 volunteer firefighters. Bulloch County EMS and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
Engine 11, from the volunteer station in Clito, was the first to arrive and immediately launched an aggressive attack on the fire. Despite their swift efforts, the fire caused significant damage to the home before it was brought under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the family of four, who were not at home at the time, was unharmed.
In response to the devastation, members of the Statesboro Fire CAFE team responded to the scene and reached out to several local organizations to provide support to the displaced family. The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT), Bulloch VOAD - Bulloch Strong, the Statesboro Food Bank, and Fostering Bulloch Hope Chest have all stepped up to assist with temporary housing, food, and other essential needs. Citizens who want to help the family are encouraged to work through Fostering Bulloch Hope Chest initially. They will post unmet needs on their Facebook page as they work through the process with the family.
As fire investigators continue their routine investigation to determine the cause of the blaze, Chief Joe Carter reminded residents of the importance of fire safety. “With cold weather upon us, it’s a good time to check your smoke alarms and make sure they are working properly,” he said.
The quick response from local firefighters and citizens helped prevent what could have been a much worse tragedy, but the loss of the home is still a devastating blow to the affected family. Local agencies continue to rally together to assist the family during this difficult time.
