Safe Haven recently received more than 40 Christmas stockings from the Staying in Stitches Quilt Guild, all filled with goods for families in need.

For almost 20 years, the Guild has supported Safe Haven and survivors of domestic violence. Some guild members also donate finished quilts to Safe Haven.

Kelly Crosby, President of Staying in Stitches Quilt Guild, joined the group in 2009, taking part in the tradition of making stockings for Safe Haven.

She says what began as a few shampoos and soaps for the stockings became a dedicated effort to provide Safe Haven clients with items to help make their lives a little easier.

“One member provides fuzzy socks to fill the toe of the stockings - every year!” she shared. The stockings now include hygiene items, notebooks, calendars, and small games or puzzles. The funding for the stockings comes from a monthly raffle at the Guilds’ meetings.

Crosby shares, “We have participated in several charity projects, but we have never missed a chance to make sure Safe Haven clients know that someone cares about them at Christmas. This project is important to us. Most everyone knows someone who has been affected by family violence. We are all happy to provide a small token of hope to those who need it during a tough time.”

Kimberly Billings of Safe Haven shares, “Holidays can evoke a wide range of emotions for everyone. For survivors of domestic violence, this season may bring unique challenges."

Billings says she hopes by replacing negative memories with positive ones it can help survivors through the holidays.

Staying in Stitches member Sheri Sterling says, “Being a part of our Stocking Ministry has been one of the most fulfilling events we have. A lot of love and consideration goes into filling the stockings each year. It’s our small part to spread the joy of the season.”
