Type of Assistance: Children & Youth Services, Education/Training, Family Services, Literacy Support
Mission: To strengthen the Bulloch community by providing quality books and literacy resources for children and their families to use at home during the earliest stages of development.
Programs and Services: Ferst Readers of Bulloch County is mailing age-appropriate books and our parent engagement Leap Into Books newsletter to 175 children, birth to five years old, to help prepare children in Bulloch County to enter kindergarten with school readiness skills and a love of reading.
Research shows that 61% of low-income homes do not have any age-appropriate books for their children and 80% of childcare centers who service the low income population, do not have quality books for their students. In Bulloch County, only 33% of school age children read proficiently. The number one predictor of school success is having access to books at home. We are trying to change this statistic one child and one book at a time.
Description: Ferst Readers of Bulloch County is mailing age-appropriate books and our parent engagement Leap Into Books newsletter to 175 children, birth to five years old, to help prepare children in Bulloch County to enter kindergarten with school readiness skills and a love of reading. Our plan is to partner with Head Start in Bulloch County to provide books to their students and classrooms.
Fees: The books are provided to families for free due to the local volunteer Community Action Team who raises funds to supply the books each month to the children. The cost of the program is $42/child to receive an age-appropriate book monthly for one year.
