GC Sports | Week 6 Softball Recap

Bulloch County Softball continues. The 4 teams are battling for playoff positioning in the final weeks of the regular season.

Southeast Bulloch

The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets' softball team had a busier week than the rest as they played 3 games early in the past week. The Yellow Jackets went 3-0 on the week with wins against Liberty County, Wayne County and Islands. The high-powered offense for Southeast Bulloch has been a big part of their success, but the defense shined this week as they shutout all 3 of their opponents. Southeast Bulloch outscored their last 4 opponents 37-0.

The win on Wednesday against Wayne County was one that SEB had circled on their calendar. Earlier in the season, Wayne County handed Southeast Bulloch their only loss of the season. Head Coach Aimee Civalier talked about how big this win is for her team getting ready for the post season. "Win or lose, just playing a good team like that in this kind of atmosphere and environment is going to help us obviously in power rankings now and when we get to the postseason."

The Yellow Jackets currently have a 20-1 record on the season with a 12-0 record in region play. They have clinched the regular season region championship but are looking to position themselves in a good spot for the postseason in the power rankings. SEB is currently ranked 2nd in the GHSA Class 3A power rankings.

Southeast Bulloch goes on the road this upcoming week to take on Calvary Day and Long County on Tuesday and Thursday.

Portal

The Panthers have begun to find their stride after struggling earlier in the season. Portal split their 2 games that they competed in last week. The Panthers lost the game to Screven County then bounced back with a close win against Jenkins County.

Portal has won 2 of their last 3 games and currently sits with a 4-6 record. With the young squad that they have, being able to get these wins will boost their confidence as they head to the end of the season.

Up Next:

The Panthers are scheduled to play two road games this week. Portal will travel to face Emanuel County Institute and Claxton High.

Bulloch Academy

The Lady Gators played 2 games last week and ended up splitting them both. Bulloch Academy lost 10-2 to Pinewood Christian on Tuesday. They were able to quickly bounce back with a win against David Emanuel Academy on Wednesday.

Head Coach Ashley Burke spoke on how pleased she was with her team's response to the loss. "I have told this team it is all about how you respond," Burke said. "How will you pick yourselves up from a tough loss, how will you work together to make changes and how will you communicate with one another."

After starting the season 8-1, the Gators have lost 2 of their last 4 games. Bulloch Academy currently has a 10-3 record on the season.

Up Next:

The Gators have just one game on the schedule for this week. They will host Pinewood Christian in a rematch of last week's game. "As we prepare for Pinewood again this week, we have to think back on what we struggled with the most and adjust at practice this week," Burke said.

Statesboro

Statesboro locked horns with South Effingham in a weeklong 3-game series. The Lady Devils were swept by the Mustangs. Statesboro has been matched up with tough teams over the last several games, but they are still making progress despite getting the results in the win column. Head Coach Karry Parker says that these games help her team continue to get better and fine tune some things.

Statesboro currently sits with a 7-10 record on the season with a 2-6 record in region play.

Up Next:

The Blue Devils have another series coming up this week. This time they will face off with Bradwell Institute. Bradwell has not performed as well as the Devils' last two opponents, but coach Parker says her team will not underestimate them.

"Bradwell has been working hard and playing the same teams we have," Parker said. "We will assume nothing. I feel confident that our girls are ready for the challenge, however I am sure the Bradwell team is too."
