The Statesboro High School Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), are putting on a 5K race called "Be the Match HOSA 5K" this spring on Saturday, March 23. The inaugural event takes place at 8am at the Georgia Southern Pavilion (next to the RAC). The entry fee is $30 and includes a t-shirt and a finisher medal for the first 200 finishers.

Part of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Be the Match® Foundation, while the remaining proceeds will go to the SHS HOSA organization.

Dr. Sally Marie Futch, SHS Healthcare Science Teacher and an SHS HOSA Advisor said, "We are looking forward to this event as it will help promote our HOSA Chapter as well as Be the Match's mission."

Bethematch.org states, "For the thousands of people diagnosed every year with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a cure exists. Over the past 35 years Be The Match®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program®  (NMDP), has managed the most diverse marrow registry in the world."

"HOSA is a student led organization and this is the 2nd year that we have had HOSA at Statesboro High School. We put on community events, fundraisers, and competitions throughout the year to help promote our organization and raise money for different health-related causes," Futch shared.

Futch said one of the HOSA students came up with the idea to host a 5K.

"HOSA always promotes 'Be the Match,' which is part of the national bone marrow program," Futch said. "Be the Match is a program that has been in effect for 35 years, and they put together a diverse bone marrow registry to help people diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma. This is the inaugural event for our 5K and we hope to continue it in the coming years."
