Aggravated assault arrests highlight importance of video surveillance

On Jan. 10, 2023 at 2:15 a.m., Statesboro Police Department (SPD) Patrol officers responded to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for a male who had driven himself to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.

The male was transferred to Memorial in Savannah where he remained for several days afterward. He was able to direct officers and detectives to the Brannen Street area, claiming that the shooting occurred while he was driving from work.

Detectives located multiple shell casings on Brannen Street near Gentilly Rd. and collected them.

Surveillance video from several locations was obtained and detectives developed two suspects, Raheem Thomas (23, Lanier Drive) and Chyna Jordan (21, Lanier Drive), as being involved in the shooting of the victim. A subsequent search warrant by detectives at the couple’s apartment gathered additional evidence and both were taken into custody.

Thomas is charged with one count Aggravated Assault, one count of Criminal Damage to Property - First Degree, and one count of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. Jordan was charged with one count Aggravated Assault (Party to the Crime) and one count Obstruction (Misdemeanor). Both remain at the Bulloch County Jail pending further judicial action.

This case illustrates the value of quality video surveillance in combination with good investigative work. Surprisingly, these surveillance systems are not as common as one would think, even in commercial areas.

SPD encourages businesses to give thought to their own video surveillance needs and consider networking existing systems into the Fusus system.
