Update 8:20 AM, 9/30/21: GSP and Candler County Sheriffs office have taken a man into custody meeting the description of the suspect they were looking for without incident. He was located in the area of the search on Cool Springs church road in Candler County. We also updated the lane on I-16 from westbound to eastbound.
A car chase which began on I-16 in Dublin ended in Candler County around 9:30 pm, Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at mile marker 97 Eastbound.
GSP and Candler County Sheriff's office requested assistance from Bulloch County Sheriff's office with the car chase.
While Bulloch deputies were enroute to assist in the chase a GSP trooper performed a pit maneuver crashing into the suspects vehicle, forcing it off the road.
A second GSP vehicle and a Treutlen Sheriff's vehicle also crashed while attempting to assist in stopping the car.
Shots were fired and a suspect from the vehicle fled the scene into a wooded area. The suspect, a black male, is believed to be armed.
GSP and area law enforcement agencies have set up a parameter between I-16 and Cool Springs Church Road in Candler County.
Bulloch's K-9 units, drone unit and Statesboro and Bulloch S.W.A.T. teams have also responded to assist in locating the suspect.
GSP has requested an aviation unit which is also enroute to assist with the search.
The suspects car is believed to be stolen out of Florida.
At midnight one lane of Eastbound I-16 remained closed around the accident scene at mile marker 97. A heavy police presence will continue throughout the night, until the the suspect if located.
Candler County EMS was also dispatched to the scene. It is unclear if anyone was transported from the scene.
